Some Republicans are hopeful that Trump will find a way to cleverly step down from his tariff threats with highly publicized deal-making events that allow Trump to declare victory before the economic pain of inflation or supply chain shocks set in. In a post on Substack, Republican pollster Jon McHenry writes, “As the President negotiates with China over tariffs, he should explain to the American people why the issue is important to the country, which will reinforce his base voters and potentially convince independents who were split on levying tariffs on China.”
