Whit Ayres, March 14

Whit Ayres’ comments on the President’s reelection prospects, in the Dayton Daily News:

Whit Ayres, a Republican consultant in Virginia, said that “the primary obstacle the president faces is that he could not win a referendum on his record today.’’
“It’s pretty clear that the Obama campaign plan is to so thoroughly trash the Republican nominee that he becomes an unacceptable alternative,’’ Ayres said. “It’s fighting from a position from weakness, but it may be the only choice they have.’’

Whit Ayres, February 19

Whit Ayres’ comments on the current horserace results:

Republican pollster Whit Ayres said Mr. Obama’s gains are minimal in a composite of polls. Looking at an average of four polls taken since Feb. 10 — Rasmussen, Gallup, Democracy Corps and CNN — Mr. Ayres noted that the president’s job approval averaged 47.75 percent and his disapproval came in at 48.25 percent.

“That’s certainly no sign of a major, fundamental shift in his job approval,” Mr. Ayres said. “There’s no evidence of any particular improvement. It’s sort of like the daily variation of stock prices.”

January 2012 Resurgent Republic/Hispanic Leadership Network Survey of Florida Hispanic Registered Voters

Our latest survey for Resurgent Republic in conjunction with the Hispanic Leadership Network, conducted with Hispanic registered voters in Florida, focused on: attitudes toward the President’s leadership; immigration reform; education reform; and jobs and the economy.

The results show that President Obama continues to underperform among Florida Hispanic voters and has done little to bolster his standing among this critical swing state demographic since our September survey last year. His level of support on the presidential generic ballot is 11 points below his 2008 performance, which alone is enough to erase his three-point margin of victory over John McCain.

November 2011 Resurgent Republic National Survey of Voters

Our latest survey for Resurgent Republic, conducted one year before the election, focused on: attitudes toward the President’s leadership; jobs, the economy, and regulations; government taxes and spending; and health care reform.

If President Obama’s reelection campaign is a referendum on the incumbent, as are almost all reelection campaigns, then he remains in deep trouble a year out from the election, because Americans believe the country is worse off than when he was inaugurated.
